Ferguson, Pamela, Sunshine Picklelime. Random House Children’s Books, 2011. Language: G, Violence: G, Sexual Content: G
When she lets Lemon Pie, her bird friend, go to help his birdkind after an oil spill, Sunshine is forced to come to terms with her life changing on her own. When her parents split up and she loses a young friend of hers to death, Sunshine finds herself empty and lost. Without her Lemon Pie to comfort her, Sunshine turns to her neighbors for solace and philosophic advice. With the help of her neighbors, Sunshine finds the courage to make friends with other birds in her area, enter the school art show, and step outside of her box. When a nasty pet owner starts causing problems for the birds and owls in her area, Sunshine finds herself being the only hope for her new friends. Can Sunshine stay out of her box and use her newfound advice to conquer the newest problem in her life?
The characters are likable and diverse. The stories are cute, but don’t ever really connect. Readers seeking an early introduction to multiple plot books who like realistic fiction and animals, however, will probably enjoy reading this book. EL (K-3). OPTIONAL.
