A Little Piece of My Past

Yesterday was a sad day for my past.  I was a huge Monkees fan and adored the lead singer Davey Jones.  I remember waking up to a door sized poster of him from Teen Beat magazine every morning and kissing it when I walked out of the room.  Everytime he sang the song, "Girl" he was not singing it to Marcia Brady....it was my personal song from him.  I thought the television show the Monkees was a riot and could not wait for it to come on just for another glimpse of Davey.  My heart would race and my face would flush.  I guess yesterday was also a sad day for the likes of Marcia Brady and a certain generation of teen-idol worshippers too because Davy Jones, the breakout heartthrob of the Beatles-inspired, made-for-TV band the Monkees, died in a Florda hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was only 66.  When I was 12 Teen Beat magazine was my personal reference book.  I knew all I needed to know(or thought I did) about David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman and others just like them....including Davey. Where are the idols like this today?  The fresh faced sounds crooning their love ballads to an ever waiting group of adoring teenaged fans?  I don't think they exist anymore.  The lyrics have become raunchier as the years have passed by.  I mean come on now....performers still sing "Daydream Believer"....it was a great song.  It could be someone life mantra.  How many songs from today can you say that about???  I have to agree with the Monkees song, Shades of Gray....life has changed from when I was a fresh faced kid who wore grooves in her vinyl listening to Davey Jones over and over.
