“Ahhhh! Ahhh! He’s scary!” Natalie shrieked diving under the covers.
“Zak Bagans says to listen to your mother. Zak Bagans thinks you need to be nicer to her,” I said, waving the book around.
Confused?
Well, I got a book about ghosts from the library. It was written by Zak Bagans, and yes, some of you might recall that he has a show called Ghost Adventures on The Travel Channel. (Which is very interesting. I do believe in ghosts.)
Anyway, the cover looks like this:
Kinda creepy, huh?
I personally like the top hat.
Natalie likes nothing about it.
“Why does that man look so SCARY?” she asked when she first saw the book. And then she hid and was like, “I don’t like him!”
Then I had an idea: maybe show her the book when she didn’t listen. She doesn’t listen a lot since Tom deployed. She loves to make him happy. Me? Not so much. She seems to find it amusing when I get to my wit’s end.
This is why I had some fun making the book pop up. It might have even ended up in her seat when she refused to listen to me.
“Why is this scary man HERE?” Natalie shouted, shoving the book off her chair.
“He heard you didn’t listen when I asked you to clean up,” I explained. Look, when my husband is gone, I need to turn to odd ideas to enforce the rules. Some people might be all, “Oh, this can damage a child’s psyche,” but I’m not into the new age parenting crap.
For a few blissful hours, Natalie behaved, lest she upset the scary man in the top hat.
But then, when I brought it out because she proclaimed that she would not eat dinner, she sniffed and was like, “That is PRETEND.”
Oh, come ON!
I was even considering buying my own copy of the book if it got her to eat her peas.
But no.
Dang it.
