Friday Night/Saturday Day Nightmares

How many times have you awakened in the middle of the night and couldn't go back to sleep because of a prevailing situation that was praying on your mind? I am not sure that my Friday night deluge was a prevailing situation....it was more a horrendous nightmare.  By the time I awoke at 3 a.m. I had real moisture running down my face.  Somewhere between reality and the dream world I was crying.  Our house sits in a pasture.  In my dream Frank was helping our neighbor Keith cut hay since his son, Chris had had an accident and was not able to help his dad.  I was at work....Frank fell into part of the machinery that is used for cutting hay.  I was notified at work....alone....that it was serious.....and that they had airlifted Frank to East Alabama Medical Center.....and it was bad.  I jumped in my car....no one went with me....and headed the forty-five miles to where my husband was.  Keith met me outside the ER.  He was crying....and all he could say was that he was sorry.  Everywhere I turned in the ER...members of the Rock Mills congregation met me....preventing me from going through the doors.  They were all crying....and they were all saying they were sorry.  I never made it through the doors.  I woke up.....with a very wet face and pillow.  I was so shaken that I got up and went to the living room where I turned on the lights and just prayed.  My hands were shaking too badly to crochet....so I just sat and prayed.  I got up three times and checked to see if Frank was ok.  By the time he woke at 5 I was beginning to settle down.....some.  I have always had vivid dreams.  Sometimes they are good....other times they are bad or warnings of something that is to come.  I'd guess that much of the time when you can't sleep there is something troubling you.  I know that is the case with me.  Mosts of the time I have some deep seeded issue I have not turned over to God.  I can guarantee you that it is always some event or problem that has had or you are afraid will have a negative impact on you. So where does all this negativity come from?  That is simple.... it is some of  Satans handiwork. Yep, the devil makes you do it. He does his best work in the dark.  At least he does in my dark.  In C.S. Lewis's Screwtape Letters we read about a classic example of Satan's work in the dark. Writing to his nephew, Wormwood, an up-and-coming devil, about how to continue to confuse and mis-direct Christians the devil Screwtape says, "You can waste his time not only in conversation he enjoys with people whom he likes but in conversations with those he cares nothing about on subjects that bore him. You can make him do nothing at all for long periods. You keep him up late at night, not roistering but staring at a dead fire in a cold room. All healthy and outgoing activities which we want him to avoid can be inhibited and nothing given in return, so that at last he may say, as one of my own patients said on his arrival down her. 'I now see that I spent most of my life in doing neither what I ought nor what I like.' " So nighttime is when Satan does some of his best, or worst for us, work. He keeps you up worrying. He makes sure that negative things occupy your mind. In dark rooms and dim lighting you can see as well, so your thinking is often unclear, murky, unreal. He does not like for light to shine on his sinister operation being fearful that it will be exposed for what it is.  I know this.  I was never so glad to see daylight come.  Psalm 30:5(b) says, "Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning."   All I can say is thank you Lord for dispelling my darkest fears by shining your eternal light on them.    Can I get an Amen?  On Saturday night I slept well because I knew that  God had me covered.

Five Minute Friday - Red

“Writing is an act of faith, not a trick of grammar.” ~E. B. White
1. Write for 5 minutes flat for pure unedited love of the written word.
2. Link back here and invite others to join in.
Here’s how.
3. Be generous and leave an encouraging comment for the person who linked up before you. That’s the best part about this community.
And if you don’t have a blog, feel free to leave your five minutes of writing as a comment. And we’ll love on you there.
Today’s prompt is:

Red….

Red is one of my favorite colors.  On the color pallette of life it is in the top five....I love red because.....

I have seen the red poppies in fields in Italy.  I must have taken a hundred different pictures.  I loved to feel the breezes and watch the beautiful red flowers dance for me..........
Of red orchids that my best friends mom grew in her yard where I grew up.  One of my favorite happy places was sitting in her back yard and enjoying the colorful, dainty orchids.  One of the saddest places it became when the neigborhood disappeared and FAU took it over to be a sports practice field.  Gone are all the red orchids. They live on only in my memories.

Of the red in the roses that Charles W. gave me on my 18th birthday.  I had 18 red roses...my first....they meant he cared for me.  I adored him.  I have often wondered where and how he is.  My next door neighbor painted those 18 roses for me.  The flower itself is gone....but the painting still reminds me of when I was young....and in love.

Of the red in the tomatoes that I canned.  I have to remember the red in my hands where they were scalded too.  Canning tomatoes is NOT one of my favorite things to do.  I love to eat them....but forget canning them.  Yet, they are so beautiful and red in the clear jars.  Beckoning me to eat them.

Of the red that borders the sun as it sets over the Mackinaw Bridge in Michigan.

Of the red hibiscus in Mrs. Betty Jeans yard that draws me to that happy place often.

Of the red of the leaves in the fall.  They are beginning to change here and I cannot wait for the colors to arrive and delight me.

Of the red of the Rock Mills new rescue truck.  It is so pretty and shiney.  The guys are all very happy to have it.
Of the red in the hair of my precious daughter and the red on her lips.  I love running my fingers through her hair.  She is one of the things I have been blessed with.  Red....one of my favorite colors for many reasons.

When Fashion Shows Go Wrong

I love buying clothes for my kids. Mainly for my daughter, because girl clothes are incredibly adorable. I've done many fashion shows on my blog of her in her new outfits. Most of the time, all I have to do to get her to smile is make farting noises or run into the side of the house. Injuring myself amuses her, you see.

But sometimes, none of that works.

Sometimes....photo shoots go bad...

I was trying to get Natalie to model this super awesome outfit from Gymboree. But she was too busy making strange noises that sounded like, "EEEEEE! EEEEE! EEEE!"

"Look at my tongue!"

Then she decided she was just going to keep her eyes shut for 5 minutes. "My eyes are resting. No cameras right now. Sorry."

I tried running into the side of the house again. Nothing. I made farting noises. Nothing.

In fact, after I made the rude noises with my mouth, she did this:

"That's just not funny to me anymore."

Please. She was being difficult. I refuse to believe I raised kids who are not amused by farts.

She snapped out of her sadness and said, "You can take pictures of me with puffed out cheeks!"

"Natalie, can I PLEASE just get a nice smiling picture of you?"

"Just ONE smiling picture?"

"You can pretend this is me. Here."

"Natalie!"

"Okay! Here!"

"Thanks for the duckface, Natalie."

"What's that mean?"

"I'll explain it to you when you get on Facebook. It's something that women do. Some believe they look good but in reality, everyone who sees the picture is secretly going, "Duckface." Now can I please have a smile?"

"Natalie Elizabeth! Please! Just one!"

"I'm a confused kangaroo right now! Sorry!"

I was about to give up. But then I suddenly shouted, "WE WERE ON A BREAKKKKKKK!"

"I love Ross!"

Apparently quoting Friends was getting her to quit the odd poses.

"Joey is funny too, Mommy. How you doin'?"

(Yes she watches Friends. What? It's a good show.)

And it got her to semi-cooperate:

So note to self: if farting noises and running into the house doesn't work, quote Friends.

"I want to salute for my Daddy because I miss him and I want him home again."

Pageant Dress Gone Wild!

I am not a pageant mom.  I really don't even like the concept of pageants....but I have several friends who are all about them....and I love my friends....so I have been to a few in my lifetime.  When the girls are little....the dress is usually a fru fru kind of dress...with crinoline petticoats and loads of lace, glitter, and glam.  As pageant girls age....the dresses are typically known for their sparkles and frills, but this year’s Miss Alabama decided to show some school pride with her parade dress for the 2013 Miss America competition.  I bow to her for her school pride....but I have some issues with her dress.  She is Miss Alabama....and that means she represents the STATE....Not just the School!  There are quite a few colleges and universities in this state that are getting slammed with her choice of dresses.
Miss Alabama is a student at Alabama.  When I saw the dress she showed ahead of this year’s competition,  I wanted to gag.  I sat in awe of this custom-made University of Alabama gown. The dress, made by Ann Northington, consists of a black jumpsuit with a houndstooth skirt that spells out “Roll Tide” on the front and has a Crimson Tide 2012 National Champions emblem on the back.

If the dress is not enough.....there are the shoes.  I am a crafter.....and these shoes look like a novice with a whole bunch of crafting leftovers and a glue gun going wild.

The South gets a bad enough rap as it is....with Honey Boo-Boo, cops like Jackie Gleason, the Redneck shows, Bama Gold,  etc....does it have to bleed over into pageants now?   I think I am going to start saying I am from Kansas.  At least there the shoes were just ruby, they could take you back home, and there was always something to be found "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."  I am signing out before I get myself in trouble.  Happy Trails!

Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Waiting For Books

I checked the website and scowled.

Number 88. Really? Who were these 87 people in front of me? I think I needed the book more than they did. My husband is DEPLOYED. Reading is my OUTLET.

“Not fair,” I muttered like my six-year-old and clicked off the site with disgust.

I was checking to see what number I was on the wait list for some books at the local library. The one I checked was for The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. People keep mentioning how good it is so I thought, okay, it’s been out for a bit, the wait shouldn’t be that long.

Wrong.

I’d just BUY the book but I promised Tom I’d cut back. My shelf is STUFFED with books. I have PILES of books. We’re in base housing so we’re running out of room. Then when we move we’re only allowed so much weight and books get heavy when you own like 500+ of them.

And yes, I could buy the book and then sell it, or pass it on, but it pains me to give my books up. I dropped off two large bags of books at the Airman’s Attic once and wanted to cry. I think I frightened the woman when I asked if they’d be well taken care of. She said something like, “They’ll be put on the shelf…??” and then backed away with my beloved books.

So I have to wait. And sometimes the waiting takes forever.

Come on you 87 people. Hurry and read the book.

I am not a patient person when it comes to wanting to read something.

(But I am buying the new Bridget Jones book next month. I did make a promise to Tom, but there are some books I must own. Some women have an obsession with shoes. I have an obsession with books.)

Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. What's something you're never too young or too old to enjoy?
Easy peasy.....Homemade ice cream, Disney World, summer days, lemonade, music would be a few that come to mind for me.

2. Share one happy memory from your high school years.
I hated school when I was in high school, but....I loved New Dawn (church youth choir) and I have to be honest some of  my happiest memories from those years are associated with New Dawn and our youth group at church. We were a talented, funloving, Christian bunch of kids in various grades, who came together from three or four different high schools, and we were very tight knit.  I loved singing with them and being a part of them throughout my high school years.  Some of us have connected on facebook and that is really nice.  There are many I would love to hear from but have no clue where they are.

3. A nationwide strike of fast food employees took place in the US last week...they're calling for higher wages and the right to unionize. Your thoughts?  I personally believe that fast food restaurants do not pay fair wages....for that matter most restaurants don't.  I worked my way through college waiting tables and was paid wait staff wage.  I grew up in a union household and know that the union protected my father and our family throughout my growing up years.  With that said....unions are not the answer for every issue and this is one of those.  The workers need to realize that fast food is a job...temporary....hopefully not a lifelong career.....and minimum wage is a good wage for kids in school.  I realize that it is not a good wage though for someone who is unemployed and looking to feed their family.  $15.00 an hour is way too much to pay the laborers.  Once employers are forced to make union wages....then they begin to let go of employees....and the prices of the commodity go up....it is a lose-lose situation I think.

4. September is National Honey Month...what's a favorite dish you make or eat that calls for honey?  I don't use a lot of honey, I love it in hot tea and that is about it.  I like it on pancakes and waffles.  I use it occassionally to cook with.

5. If you notice someone with a tag sticking out, a button unbuttoned, a shirt inside-out, or some leftover lunch between their teeth, do you say something or do you keep quiet? If I know you I'd retuck your tag, tell you that there is something between your teeth, or let you know if a button were undone.  If I can do it without embarrassing you.  If I don't know you....I am not going to say anything....sorry.

6. What's a movie that always makes you cry? Or at least makes you feel like crying?  The Notebook is the movie that literally leaves me gasping for breath.  It is the story of my parents and it rips me out of the frame everytime I watch it....which I do sometimes when I am missing them.
7. Mary Had a Little Lamb was written in 1830, and published in Juvenile Miscellany in September of that same year. Now for the fun part...create your own four line rhyme using that same tune.
I teach at a high school here,

It's sometimes drear
Is That a tear?
I work at a  high school here
Oh yes it's my career.

Ok...I am on a roll...., this is fun

Number 2
I am the pastor at Midway
I work Sunday
God's work I say
I am pastor at Midway
We sing, we learn we pray........

8. Insert your own random thought here.  I don't know about you....but I absolutely hate the camel - humpday commercial.  The first time I saw it...it was funny.....but it is on all the time...and I don't like it.  Is there a commercial that you don't care for?  Care to share?  I love to see what the viewing habits of others are....My favorite commercial...is the dos equis one...I love it when he says...."Stay thirsty my friend."

BTW.....My best friends mom died at 2:15 this morning and my heart is hurting for her.  Her mom was in her 90's and lived in the Orlando area.  Sue and her family were in Ohio on vacation when the call came in.  She was headed to her house and then on to West Palm.  I so want to be with her and was hoping when she passed that I would be able to go and be with her.  She and her husband Chuckles were with me when both my parents died and when my parents were missing.  I was actually on vacation at their house when the call about my mom came in.  Sue and I hopped in her car and headed to Alabama.  We called the guys and they gathered our stuff together and ended up only about 30 minutes behind us.  When you say your prayers tonight please remember Sue and her family in them.  I know she would appreciate it.

How I Dealt With A Temper Tantrum and an Autism Meltdown

I opened the fridge, pulled out the marshmallow fluff flavored vodka, opened it, and wrapped my mouth around the opening.

I’d like to say I chugged it.

But I don’t chug. Maybe something is wrong with me. I don’t know. The second the liquid hit my tongue, my gag reflex went off and I managed a tiny, pathetic sip. I could never do shots either. While everyone tossed them back, I sipped mine.

Still. The tiny bit of alcohol I did get seemed to warm my body. I put the bottle away, opened a drawer, and reached for a chocolate bar. I managed to stick half of that in my mouth without gagging. I’m a champion when it comes to eating.

So why was I (attempting) to chug booze and stuffing my face with calories?

Because of the tiny people I had helped create. My daughter started it all when she refused to take a bath. She had been sitting on the living room floor, surrounded by her My Little Ponies. I had warned her that she had five minutes until bathtime. She responded with a sharp nod and continued to play. Then I kindly said five minutes later, “Okay, it’s time for a bath,” and I was met with, “Not yet.”

I’m sorry. Not yet? I was polite and gave her a warning time like all the ‘experts’ suggest for easier transitions. I was not going to put up with “not yet.”

“It’s time for your bath,” I tried again. “I’ll put bubbles in it.”

Natalie shook her head. “I’m playing.”

I counted to five silently and went, “Natalie. I’m the mother and when I ask you to do something, you do it. I’m sorry you didn’t get one of those parents who let the kids come up with their own rules. No, you got a mother who expects to be told “yes mommy” when I ask you to do something. I get that you’re getting older and therefore will test my limits but I’m here to tell you that it won’t happen. If I allow it now you’ll turn into one of those scary teens who think it’s okay to wear tiny clothes and smoke and experiment with drugs. So when I say it’s time for your bath, you tell me “yes mommy.” So let’s try this again: Natalie. It’s time for your bath.”

Natalie opened her mouth and for a second I thought, “Yes, it worked, my speech worked!”

Then she screamed.

And shouted, “I AM PLAYING WITH MY PONIES!”

Clearly, this is unacceptable behavior. So I picked her up and carried her to her bedroom. I explained that she was not allowed to scream and yell at me while she bellowed, “All I wanted to do was PLAY WITH MY PONIES!”

So I’m dealing with one child behaving like what I imagine Amanda Bynes behaved like before she got the help and then Tommy comes rushing out of his room freaking out because he can’t take all the noise. He’s clamping his hands over his ears and going, “Stop, NATALIE STOP, I CAN’T TAKE THIS! I CAN’T TAKE THIS, STOP, STOP, STOP.”

He has autism and deals with sensory issues, so he cannot handle the crying.

I have one little girl sobbing hysterically, I have a boy in full meltdown mode. What I wanted to do was drop Natalie, run out of the house, and go racing down the street. But I couldn’t, because Tom isn’t here, and it’s just me.

I had to come up with a solution. I could come up with a solution. Think. WWOPD. (What would Olivia Pope do? Weird thing to pop in someone’s mind, but I’ve been watching season 2 of Scandal.)

I set Natalie down in her bed and told her she needed a time out. I shut her door as Tommy rocked back and forth in the hallway.

“SHE NEEDS TO STOP! SHE’S THE WORST! SHE’S TOO OLD FOR THIS! IT’S TOO NOISY!” Tommy bellowed.

This is what you have to do when Tommy is in full meltdown mode. You have to look him in the eye, which isn’t easy, because he’s not always a fan of eye contact. You have to grasp his wrists and remind him to breathe, breathe, breathe. Then you pull him against you and rub his back, all while reminding him to breathe.

“It’s okay, it’s okay, breathe, breathe, breathe,” I whispered. “Breathe.”

“I CAN’T TAKE IT, MOMMY! STOP IT NATALIE! YOU ARE THE WORST! Why did you have to have another baby? Why couldn’t I have been the only one? SHE’S THE WORST!” Tommy screamed.

And yes, while he was shouting that, Natalie was still having a temper tantrum.

“Tommy, stop it. Don’t say ugly things, you are better than that. Breathe.” I brought him into his room and shut his door. Natalie’s cries were slightly muffled. I held him close, rubbing his back. “Breathe.” I felt his body began to relax. He began to take deep breaths. I stayed with him for a bit until he was better. Then I said I was going to check on Natalie. As I left, he began crashing against his mattress over and over again. This also helps relax him.

Natalie also was beginning to calm down. She whispered an “I’m sorry” and promised she’d take her bath.

“It’s just,” she sniffled, “my ponies didn’t want me to leave.”

Later, as she took her bath, Tommy wandered over and apologized. “When Natalie cries like that, it feels like I have a million razors stabbing my brain,” he explained. “I’ll try to be better.”

So yes. I have rough days. But every parent does.

It’s why I have a chocolate drawer.
