The Sign of the Rainbow

Today is Sunday. It is a Sunday when we mess with time and my body hates that. I am not particularly fond of springing forward because I am so much better at falling back. Last night in a rather distressful fit of sleep, of lack thereof, I had a terrible dream about bad weather. I woke up several times to check outside only to find that all was right with the world. During the last clip of my dream there was a tornado involved.....and when the sun rose after the night of terror.....there is was a most awesome rainbow. I love rainbows. I love to see them after a particularly frightening storm....because when I see them I know what they mean. In Genesis 9: 12-17 God gives us an assurance or covenant that he will never destroy the earth by flood again. So when the waters start to rise just read the following verses and remember..."12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."
17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth." Next time you see a rainbow, understand that you have just had a personal message from God. How cool is that?

Granny McCain

Let me tell you about my Granny McCain. She was a straightrazor toting woman. She lived with my little Grandmother on my momma's side of the family and lived to be just shy of 100 years old. I come from a long line of longevity. Anyways, one summer several of the grandkids were visiting Grandmother Prophitt. Granny McCain had a trunk in her room that was full of goodies for little girls to play with. Clothes, hats, shawls, gloves...they were all there hiding in the chest. Amanda, Terry, Linda, and I were all there....and we wanted to get into that chest. The only problem we had was that little Grandmother had told us we could not cross the threshold and bother Granny McCain. So we stood at the door like little children outside the candy store....with begging in our eyes...trying to get her to ask us in.....She was eating chocolate. It looked like Hershey squares and we wanted some of the chocolate....at that moment...even more than the trunk....so we asked her sweetly, "Granny, can we haf sum choclate?" Equally as sweet she held out two squares a piece. Granny was a few fries shy of a happy meal because she had dementia. AND....I need to tell you....that at this very moment...I was the oldest child....and only 6...the youngest was 3....and the chocolate....wasn't chocolate....least of all not Hersheys. It was Ex-Lax. We each ate two squares of a laxative....and my grandmother only had one bathroom in her house at the time. It was not a pretty sight. We were all very sick and my poor grandmother had to take care of all four of us. To this day...I do not like Hersheys bars.....nor Ex-Lax.

My Dear Letters

Nothing much to write about so I'll do My Dear letters because they are oh so much fun to do.

---------------

Dear Tom,

You amuse me. You claim that you hate reality shows. But yet, on Monday, you joined me in watching the finale of The Bachelor. Admit it, it was because of the potential drama, right? You’re a total drama whore.

I’m sorry if I was a little irritated with you while we watched. Yes, it wasn’t nice of me to say that I was going to claw your eyes out if you fast forwarded through the part where Jason was crying. I guess I’m always eager to watch men cry since I don’t see it happen that often. Or maybe it was because Jason reminded me of a hyena when he was leaning over the balcony with his mouth hanging open and his face all contorted like that.

I also apologize for telling you to shut up. But I wanted to hear what Molly was saying when Jason told her that he had to let her go. When she went, "I don't understand," and you shouted, "What's not to understand? He's picking the other chick," I admit, it was rude of me to tell you to shut your trap. I'm just not used to watching things with you. I forget how much you speak during my shows. Which is probably why we don't watch a lot of TV together.

Signed,
An-apologetic-wife-but-please-hush-while-my-shows-are-on,
Amber

---------------

Dear Bachelor Jason,

I cannot believe you. Your new name is Huge Complete Asshole (pronounced Hoo-kah.) I don’t believe you followed your heart. I believe you followed what the producers wanted you to do.

I’m sure you son will be so proud when he’s older and learns what you have done. He can bring you into his school for career day. "This is my Daddy. He was on a reality show and was a huge jackass. And plus, he cried like a hyena."

Signed,
A-Disgusted,
Amber

--------------

Dear Melissa (woman that Jason jilted on television),

You have more class than I do. If Jason had dumped me on national television, I’d have kept the ring. I'd have sold it and went shopping. Because shopping makes everything better.

Also, I’d have held up my pinky finger towards the cameras and said, “By the way, this is how big Jason’s penis is.”

Because I’m sorry, no one humiliates me like that and gets away with it.

Dear Girl Scout Cookies,

Please start tasting like sawdust. Please. My thighs can’t take it. My WiiFit is going to yell because it juse senses when I have not eaten well. I somehow managed to eat an entire box of Caramel Delights in less than 24 hours. I don’t even remember doing it. I just know that I went to the box to grab a cookie and there was nothing left.

Sorry Tom, I didn't mean to accuse you of eating my cookies. You're right, it's not nice to throw empty boxes at your head.

Signed,
A-Caramel-Delights-Loving,
Amber

---------------

Dear Local Girl Scout,

Thank you for selling me that other box of Caramel Delights. Though I did not appreciate you looking at me as though you expected me to return all along. You didn’t even seem shocked when I walked over to your house as you played with your friends and casually asked if you had anymore cookies.

“This is Tommy’s Mom,” you informed your playmates. “She's in love with Girl Scout cookies.”

Your friends gaped at me as though I had put on a Hannah Montana wig and attempted to bellow out a Hannah Montana song.

I almost wanted to explain myself. “Hey kids! I’m not IN LOVE with Girl Scout cookies. I just like them. Very very much. There is a difference, okay?”

Instead I stood there awkwardly while you darted into your house to retrieve another box of Caramel Delights.

I handed over my three dollars and fifty cents a few minutes later and you passed the box to me and said, “Maybe these will last longer, huh?”

Is it me, or are kids growing brattier each year?

An-All-I-Wanted-Was-A-Polite-Cookie-Exchange,

--------------

Dear Natalie,

I don't know where your Dancing Brobee went. Maybe if you promise not to turn him on 30 times per day he'll return.

Zen of Sarcasm

I love sarcasm....especially when I am the one dishing it out. My friend Trina sent me an email today with some priceless comments and since this is Friday I thought I would head into the weekend with some funnies for you all to chew around.

Boobs and Sheets

So I was in Target the other day with Natalie.

I'm Amber and I'm a Target-holic.

(Hi Amber!)

I should probably set up a second house at Target. Since I’m there so often. Is it wrong that a lot of workers recognize me?

The truth is, I rarely buy anything full price at Target. I buy items when they go on clearance. I bought Tommy two pairs of pants for 75% off and I felt as though I had won the lottery or something. You have to understand that my son goes through pants like David Hasslehoff goes through booze.

Sometimes I just like to go to Target to browse. You never know what you’ll find on a clearance rack. Tom doesn’t comprehend this. He once called me and asked where I was.

“Target,” I answered brightly.

“What do you need at Target?” he replied.

“Nothing. I’m just looking,” I explained.

Tom was confused. Tom only shops when he knows exactly what he wants. His brain just doesn’t compute why women like to go into a store and just browse.

It’s probably why we rarely shop together.

It usually ends in disaster. Because I’ll go down an aisle and Tom will ask why I’m going to look at the candles.

“Just to look,” I’ll say.

This irritates him. He’ll give a long sigh and say, “But why? We don’t need candles.”

He just doesn’t get it. Sometimes I like to pick up a candle and breathe in the lovely cinnamon scent. Just because I can. Tom would never waste time sniffing candles. If we need one, he just plucks one off the shelf and tosses it in the cart. Without even smelling it!

“Tom, how do you know if that smells nice?” I once asked him.

“It’s vanilla. Vanilla smells nice,” he’ll assure me.

But you just never know. Some vanilla candles smell like rotten toe cheese.

But I digress.

I did have a reason to go to Target yesterday. I wanted to pick up new sheets for Natalie’s bed. But of course I couldn’t look just at the sheets. I had to look around the rest of the store too.

I didn’t find much on the clearance racks. Then we made it to the sheet section and I showed Natalie the set I wanted to buy.

“Isn’t it pretty?” I asked excitedly.

“I play?” she responded and tried to climb out of the cart. She draped one leg over the handle. I had to pick her up and put her on my hip. After she attempts to break free from the cart, it’s nearly impossible to put her back. I mean, you could try, but she’ll scream the entire store down. So out of respect for the other shoppers I just pick her up. You’re welcome, shopping patrons of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

We headed for the book section next. It’s no secret that I’m a book lover. I could read all day if my children would let me. As it is, they find it amusing to rip the book from my hands and attempt to throw it away.

I’m not kidding.

Natalie did this the other day. I thought she had been happily entertaining herself by playing with her toy kitchen. But I suppose the fact that my attention drifted away from her caused her to be insulted, because she came over and plucked the novel away from me and then rushed off.

Then she smiled at me sweetly and tossed it in the trash.

Thank goodness I had just changed it. I’m not sure if I could have read a book that smelled like old tacos.

I explained to Natalie that we don’t throw away books.

“I sorry, Mom,” she told me in what I thought was a genuine voice.

But then she tried to throw away one of Tommy’s books.

So now I have to constantly check the trash to make sure Natalie didn’t chuck something else away.

“Toodee!” Natalie suddenly shrieked as we approached the book section. She was gesturing wildly to the area in front of us. It turns out she had spotted a creepy Yo Gabba Gabba book. She nearly kneed me in the gut while trying to get to it.

I bought it for because I want her to love reading as I do.

Okay, fine, and because I wanted a few minutes of shopping peace. Which I got. She even sat back down in the cart and flipped silently through her book.

Thank you, creepy Yo Gabba Gabba.

While we stood in line to check out, Natalie suddenly set her book down and looked at me seriously.

“Boob,” she said.

I whispered, “Not right now.”

Natalie was not pleased. “BOOB!” she said, a few octaves louder.

There was an older woman behind me. I heard her chuckle. “She’s calling you a boob,” she told me brightly.

I felt my face grow warm. “No,” I explained. “She wants boob.”

The old lady leaned over towards Natalie. “You’ll just have to wait until you’re older,” she said.

Natalie, who tends to freak if strangers get too close to her, shrieked, “BOOB!” which was followed by a dramatic screech.

I bet the old lady is sorry she put her hearing aids in that day.

“She wants milk. From the...” I trailed off. I couldn’t say the word boob again. I have no idea why. I mean, when Tommy was younger I could easily tell him that penises belong in our pants and not out for all to see without batting an eyelash.

But apparently, it’s difficult for me to say the b-word more than once.

“She looks too old to still be drinking breast milk,” the old lady said. She looked a little disgusted.

“Well,” I said. “I’m trying to wean her.”

I bit my tongue to keep from adding, “You old biddy.”

And I am. Trying to wean her. It’s just, I believe I give birth to extremely stubborn children. Natalie refuses regular milk. I’ve tried chocolate milk. Strawberry milk. Soy milk. She doesn’t want any of it.

I’m cutting her off when she’s two. I’m sorry, but I’d like my body back.

When we got home I threw Natalie's new bedset in the washer to get rid of the store smell.

They were ready by naptime so I explained that she was getting new sheets and wasn't that exciting?

"Cah-co-dat," Natalie answered. Which is how she says chocolate.

Okay, fine. I can't blame her for wanting some chocolate. If I had a choice between sheets or chocolate, I'd pick the chocolate. Well, unless they were like 10,000 count sheets. Do those even exist?

Here are Natalie's new sheets. Bought for only $29 at Target:

Natalie was jumping on her bed. I wish I had that much energy first thing in the morning. I really do.

As it is I'm like a lump. With crazy hair.

I Can Bee!

Several years ago I went to a conference done by Mamie McCullough. What a speaker she was. I left the place flying high....literally. If you ever get a chance to see her....GO! Anyways, her topic was on being the best you can be....being what you want to be....being you....and she told a little story about bees I just felt like I needed to share with you. Did you know that scientists can prove that it is aerodynamically impossible for the bumble bee to fly? The body of the bee is too heavy and its wings too light to sustain flight. But the bumble bee chooses not to be influenced by science's negative viewpoint and flies anyway. When you look at the bee, thing this thought, I CAN BEE what I want to BEE!......But you can't stop there....you have to BEElieve it and DO IT! Today, Thursday, March 5th 2009....I say Bee All that You Can Bee.....Happy Thursday!

More Tales from the WiiFit

So, after I put Natalie down for her nap I usually go downstairs to do my WiiFit run.

I run for ten minutes in place while gripping onto the WiiFit remote. I usually put on a television program and hope that it will distract me from the pain.

It doesn't.

Yesterday I put on The Real World. I thought all the drama between the boys and the girls would cause me to forget that I couldn't breathe properly. I mean, ew, the boys put a rat in one of the girl roommates bed.

But all I could think about was my thighs, my thighs, oh dear God my THIGHS ARE BURNING!

Another time I put on Jon and Kate Plus 8 and I only found myself annoyed when they mentioned their (free) washer and dryer sets at least a dozen times.

"I love my Whirlpool," Kate kept saying.

Yeah. If I got a set like that for free, I'd love it too. I mean, Whirlpool, if you're reading this, I'd love a set of free washer and dryers. Yes, I may only have two kids. I get that Kate has 8. But sometimes I FEEL like I have 8 kids. Plus, I have a hyperactive son who can somehow manage to dirty two outfits per day. That all adds up. I also have a husband who scatters his boxers around the bed and by the time I manage to find them all it's nearly an entire load right there (because I get sick of Tom whining that he has no clean underwear and I'm sorry, I COULD make him clean them up himself but I will not be married to a man who wears filthy drawers. I just will not.)

But anyhow.

Yesterday I went to do my run. And usually the WiiFit comes on and this is when it'll tell you off if you skipped a day of working out.

Sometimes it asks me if I'm having a nice day.

Sometimes I am not having a nice day.

So I start to explain that even though it's only one thirty in the afternoon, that I've already had to unclog the toilet because Natalie is like a superhuman baby who can easily lift off the toilet locks and then she finds it hilarious to stuff the bowl full of toilet paper.

Then I remember that the WiiFit isn't real and I quickly shut my mouth.

But yeah, the WiiFit admonished me because I hadn't worked out the day before and then it asked me where my husband was.

A long time ago, Tom decided that he'd work out on the WiiFit. He did it for a week straight and then, I don't know, stopped.

The WiiFit is insulted.

Because it asked me this:

I have no idea why Tom named his character Saint. I think he likes to pretend he's some buff guy on a Clint Eastwood movie.

Really, I just wanted to get started on my run. Because the sooner I start to run, the sooner that it's over.

There is no back button. You HAVE to answer. I imagine if there were a back button and had I had pushed it, I'd have gotten a long lecture from the WiiFit.

How dare you ignore my question! Shame on you! I'm submitting your data to Jillian Michaels from The Biggest Loser and she's gonna march inside your house and throw away all your Little Debbie cakes!

NO! Not my Little Debbie cakes! Fine. I'll answer your stupid question!

So I just put that Tom looked the same. Because he does to me. I mean, he can still fit into his clothes so he hasn't gained weight. His pants haven't been falling off so he hasn't lost weight. Sorry Tom, but you aren't more toned. I know this because I share a bed with you.

I thought that would be the end of it. I thought that the WiiFit would be all, "Ahh, okay, he looks the same so we can move on."

Uh.

No.

Because then it did this:

Huh?

No, change is not always exciting. I mean, I nearly passed out when I saw that Lucky Charms were nearly four bucks a box. Last week they had been down to $1.99. That is NOT good change.

So, I thought THAT was the end of it. The WiiFit had given me a lecture, even though it's not my fault that Tom isn't working out. I mean, am I his mother? No. So leave me alone, EvilFit!

But it wouldn't!

It continued.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So not only do I have Tom whining that I don't pay enough attention to him, but I also have my electronic devices telling me the same thing.

(Seriously. Just the other night Tom was all, "All I want is a back rub, blah blah blah..." and I'm all, "All I want is some peace and quiet, blah blah blah.." Because after I put the kids down, some nights I just want to curl up and just...I don't know....BE. At that point I'm tired of dealing with other people's needs. I just want to focus on myself. And then here comes Tom, who will sometimes toss his stinky foot in my lap and ask for a foot massage. NO! Dude, I've just wiped asses and wiped noses all day, I just want to be LEFT ALONE.)

(This is not every night. I swear, I am a nice wife most of the time. It's just some nights I'd like my peace. Usually on nights when Lost airs because I need to focus 100% of my attention to the show. Otherwise I've missed a pertinent detail. I'd be annoyed if I realized I missed a special symbol because I was busy working on Tom's funky toes.)

Let me tell you, WiiFit, that even if I paid all the attention in the world to Tom, that he still would not get on you. Sorry. I hate to be blunt but it's true. My husband, while he's a wonderful man, can be a bit lazy. I mean, if he can't put his socks in the laundry basket when the laundry basket is less than two feet away, I don't think he's going to take the time to work out. I'm just saying.

So, yeah, I pushed A and hope that that is the end of it.

Because I just want to DO MY FREAKING RUN! Does the WiiFit not realize that I only have exactly an hour and a half to work out, do the dishes, scrub the counters and vacuum before Natalie wakes back up? Doesn't it comprehend that I'm on LIMITED TIME?

No.

It does not comprehend that.

And then, to boot, it compared my husband to a dog. Which, okay, I've done before. When he deserves it. I mean, sometimes he acts like one.

But then it basically repeated that I needed to pay more attention to Tom.

To the point where I began to grow suspicious.

Tom? Did you somehow make the WiiFit do this?

But then I remembered that the man barely knows how to change a tire and relaxed.

It was simply the WiiFit being...well, the WiiFit.

I was almost surprised when the WiiFit let me go work out after that. I expected page after page on how I needed to get Tom back to working out.

When Tom came home I said, "Get on the WiiFit."

He looked confused. "Huh? Is this some new sexual thing?"

I swatted his arm. "No! It asked me where you were and then..compared you to a DOG."

I left out the whole paying attention thing. (Until I showed him the picture later.)

Tom ended up getting on the WiiFit. It turns out he's lost two pounds so the WiiFit didn't give him that much of a hard time.

Sometimes, I really am tempted to hurl that WiiFit out the window.

But then, I imagine, it'll find some way to lecture me.

I just know it.

Please tell me that my WiiFit isn't the only one that seems to be injected with a little bit of Satan.
