But I love a good BBQ.
This was why I was pleased to go to Mickey’s Backyard BBQ while at Disney.
Mickey’s Backyard BBQ is located at Fort Wilderness. We had to take a boat from Magic Kingdom to get to it.
I recommend leaving for Mickey’s Backyard BBQ at least an hour beforehand. We actually left an hour and a half before. Why? Well, you never know how long it’ll take for a boat. In our case, there was some foul weather so it actually held out the boat for a few.
Yes, Natalie dressed for the occasion.
Tommy sort of did. There’s only so much you can expect an 11-year-old to agree on.
Another reason to arrive early? Some characters generally come out about a half hour beforehand.
Plus, you want to get a good table. We got a good table by the stage.
The food is a buffet, and yes, you can go back and fill your plates as often as you’d like. There is also lemonade, fruit punch, and tea to drink. Plus unlimited Mickey bars!
Yes, those are Goldfish crackers in the mac and cheese.
The food was so so. Nothing fantastic but not awful either.
Soon after, characters start coming out to dance. Kids can go up to them but they don’t pause for pictures because they need to move around.
Natalie got down with her bad self with her cousins.
It took Tommy awhile to warm up. He was beginning to get overwhelmed with all the different sensations going on. His Aspergers makes him sensitive to things like that so he actually began to cry at one point because it was too much. I went over and reminded him to breathe. Sometimes that helps.
Tom’s family is fantastic and helped him too. And soon, Tommy was able to join in with the fun:
Everyone danced and danced.
Natalie twirled and twirled.
Characters do not stay out the entire time. They take breaks and when they do, entertainment begins.

I wonder if he pulled this trick on his first date? “Look. Did you know I can spin a lasso with my toes?”
When he was done, the characters came back out and Natalie was noticed because of her twirling. And her red boots.
This guy, one of the hosts, asked if Natalie wanted to come up front and say “yee-ha!” Natalie, without any hesitation was like, “Sure! Can my cousin come with me?”
She was not shy. She boldly stated her name, her age, and where she was from.
Then it was time for more dancing!
Dale came over to boogie down.
Tommy still danced.
Then there was a Conga line:
And the Macarena! (And yes, there is also line dancing.)
The grand finale is when all the characters come out waving flags to the song “This Land Is Your Land.”
We enjoyed our evening. If your kids like to dance, I would do Mickey’s Backyard BBQ for sure.
I mean, unlimited Mickey Bars, people....
