UrbanWalls Etsy Site Review and $50 Gift Card Giveaway*CLOSED

*CLOSED--Winner posted here.*

Natalie used to think it was cute to color on the walls.

Newsflash to her: it wasn’t.

As she grew she didn’t always stop messing with the walls. To her they seemed like a blank canvas.

This was why I was thrilled when Danielle, owner of an awesome Etsy site called UrbanWalls contacted me. I checked out her page and was amazed at all the different wall decals that she had to offer. From kids decals, to beautiful designs you could have anywhere in your home, I loved every single one of them.

Isn’t this tree fantastic?

I also loved this owl one:

My husband who is super picky about things was really amazed with the airplane decal:

The plus about these decals is that you can pick your own colors if you aren’t a fan of the ones in the picture. This information is from the site: “Unlike standard high gloss signage vinyl, our product has a matte finish that gives a gorgeous painted look without bleeding or permanency. They are easy to apply, last for many years and can be easily removed but not re-used.”

We had some of the vinyl signs and let me tell you, they could be a pain to put up. I’d follow the instructions and there would be bubbles underneath. And don’t let me get started on how difficult it was to peel off.

Not so with these decals.

We ended up with this chalkboard one:

It was so incredibly easy to set up. It easily peeled from the paper and I stuck it on the wall with no problems.

Natalie was thrilled! She could color on the wall! (And yes, she's trying on her retro bathing suit. She loves it.)

All you need is regular chalk and the chalkboard is ready to go. You can write sweet messages to your kid:

And clean up is simple. I imagine you could use a regular eraser. I just used a wet paper towel and everything came right off and the fun could start again:

Natalie has also been using the chalkboard decal to practice writing her name:

Yeah. She's still on her Na kick so this will come in handy...

Want your own chalkboard decal?

Or something else?

Danielle has graciously offered a $50 gift card to her Etsy Shop to one lucky reader.

What A Woman Needs and Wants

I have a wonderful husband.  One night a week we have date night.  It may not be a huge deal....but it is the two of us...and we hold hands and act like newlyweds and I love it.  One of my favorite movies was when Mel Gibson played a character a few years ago that embodied the dream of every man. From the smallest boy who has just discovered that girls and not all uchy, to the patriarchal grandfather rocking away his retirement years on the front porch, I truly believe that all men at some time daydream of  knowing just what women what.  Mel Gibson’s character was an advertising executive. He was trying to write ads for women’s produces. To better understand women, he in his bathroom where he has put on a pair of pantyhose and smeared hair removal wax on his legs. When he rips the dried wax off, hair and all, he losses his balance and falls into a tub of water along with the hair dryer he is using. He is electrocuted. The result of his electrifying experience is the supernatural ability to hear the thoughts of the opposite sex. In case women did not know it, we really are hard for  men to read. The best men can do is guess at what we want, and hope and pray that they hit it half the time.  I know, as a woman, that it probably seems at times as if you are speaking a foreign language.  So today I am going to give you a few hints from a woman.....you know that kind that if you could read a women’s thoughts you might possibly know what would we are thinking.
First I would suggest women want men who are not too busy to listen. Even Jesus tells us this in
James 1:19 "My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry."  That applies to us as women too.  William Barclay said, "There are few wise men who have not been impressed by the dangers of being too quick to speak and too unwilling to listen."  Come on guys, do not get so busy you fail to listen. Often all your wife needs is a listening ear.  I will be honest..... “We don’t need for you to fix all our problems; we just want you to listen.”  I am telling all of you men, listening is hard work. To listen you must focus on the person speaking. Too often your minds are so filled with the cares of the day and you do not really listen to your wives.
The second thing a woman would say to men is, “Don’t be too arrogant to learn.”  Solomon warns us
in Proverbs 13:10, "Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice."
How easy it is to think you know everything just because you know some things. Have you ever been around someone who thinks he or she knows it all? You begin to resent them and dread the next time you have to meet them.  When any person is filled with pride and arrogance people hate to be around them.  I know I do.  Anyone who is like this needs to be humble enough to learn from others especially their wives and children.  One of my favorite authors Max Lucado,  suggests this scenario..
You came home cranky because a deadline got moved up. She came home grumpy because the day-care forgot to give your five-year-old her throat medicine. Each of you was wanting a little sympathy from the other, but neither got any. So there you sit at the dinner table—cranky and grumpy—with little Emily, your daughter. Emily folds her hands to pray (as she has been taught), and the two of you bow your heads (but not your hearts) and listen. From where this prayer comes, God only knows.
“God, it’s Emily. How are you? I’m fine, thank you. Mom and Dad are mad. I don’t know why. We’ve got birds and toys and mashed potatoes and each other. Maybe you can get them to stop being mad? Please do, or it’s just gonna be you and me having any fun tonight. Amen.”  The prayer is answered before it’s finished, you both look up in the middle and laugh at the end and shake your heads and say you’re sorry. And you both thank God for the little voice who reminded you about what really matters.Third I believe women would say to their husbands, “Don’t be too stoic to show love.”Hosea admonitions us in 3:1 niv  “Go, show your love to your wife.”  And Paul challenges all of us to:  "21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” He goes on to say, each husband is to love his his wife as he loves himself.   Don't you see that there is no place for a stoic attitude of indifference in these words. Paul is calling men to show their love for their wives.  I got an email about a couple that went to marriage counseling. She told the counseling through her tears, my husband does not love me any more. Her husband bristled up and said in his defense, “I told you I love you thirty years ago, I don’t see why I have to say it now, if I change my mind, I will let you know.”  I believe many men really love their wives, but they do not show it. They aren’t good at expressing their love.I am one of the fortunate ones here.  Frank is good at expressing love.  How?  Well he plans for more time together, just the two of us. We have get-aways.  He does things for me around the house with no thought of reward.  There is usually a good attitude at home.  He is very affectionate.  We found a hobby to do together - we bowl on Thursday nights.  We trust each other completely?  He is very sensitive to my needs and I do my best to be available to meet his.  Finally I suggest men should know not to be too afraid to lead.  Colossians 3:18:  "Wives, be in subjection to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them."  Ephesians 5:21-22:  "21subjecting yourselves one to another in the fear of Christ. 22Wives, be in subjection unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord." Today part of loving your wife is stepping up to the plate and taking the spiritual leadership in the home. That means doing things like studying your bible, leading your children reading their Bible and pray, being excited about going to church, taking up his spiritual responsibility.  Now, I will be honest....everything is not sunshine and lollipops all the time in the Korb house.....but I am fortunate to have a great marriage and a wonderful husband....and we both are servants of God. Have a blessed Saturday.

The Lavender Lover's Handbook

About The Book:  With its intoxicating scent, gorgeous wands of purple flowers, and silvery foliage, lavender is one of the most sought-after plants. But the horticultural reasons for choosing lavender go far beyond its beauty. Lavender attracts beneficial insects, requires little water once established, and is deer resistant. In The Lavender Lover's Handbook, lavender grower Sarah Bader teaches gardeners how they can successfully grow this beloved plant. Featuring the 100 easiest, most stunning lavenders available today, this beginner's guide provides a complete checklist of the color, fragrance, size, and foliage of each plant, in addition to basic pruning, spacing, and planting requirements. The text is rounded out with tips on how to harvest, cook, and craft with this wonderful herb. Its abundant variety, hardiness, fragrance, and culinary uses make lavender one of the most popular and versatile plants. And now, with this practical and accessible guide in hand, it's easier than ever to grow at home.
About The Author:  Sarah Berringer Bader has always been drawn to lavender.  In 2000 she purchased a five-acre farm south of Portland, Oregon, and wafter visiting the Sequim Lavender Festival in Washingon and seeing rows and rows of this wonderous herb, decided to create a test plot of 365 plants despite knowing nothbingn about planting lavender.  She learned through trial and error, helped by a little-known society of lavender pioneers who had dedicated their careers to cultivating, growing, and preserving the true species of lavender.  Soon she purchased many varieties of lavender from a seasoned grower in Oregon who had propagated starts from his own extensive collection acquired over a twenty-year span.  In 2005 she planted almost 5000 lavender plants with more than ninety cultivars and began propagating her own starts from cuttings.  She opened her farm to the public and began holding the classes that inspired this book.  Sarah and her farm, Lavender at Stonegate, have been featured in Grower Talks and Country Gardens magazines.
My Thoughts:  Lavender has intoxicated me for years.  The heady smell of it as a potpourri, the pungent taste of it in recipes, the beauty of it in decoration has always brought me a great deal of pleasure.  The photography in the book, by Janet Loughrey was amazing.  The book is filled with glorious pictures, tasteful recipes, fabulous crafts, and a wonderful education on growing lavender.  This book is a must read for anyone who has a draw to lavender.

Top Ten Things To Do In Hawaii

I’m going to Hawaii on Monday. It’s a belated honeymoon. My husband and I got married 10 years ago and we couldn’t afford one. Plus I was seven months pregnant.

I probably won’t be online all next week. I have not died. I’m in Hawaii sipping a tropical drink.

I will be updating my Twitter account. You can follow me here.

Here are the top ten things I hope to accomplish in Hawaii:

10. Find all the places were Lost was filmed and re-enact different scenes from the program.

9. Pig out on fresh pineapple. FRESH. One of our tours is to a pineapple farm.

8. Fall asleep on the beach.

7. Say “aloha” to perfect strangers.

6. Eat pig cooked on a spit. I think we’ll be doing this at the Luau.

5. Try on a grass skirt and attempt to hula dance. In our hotel room. I will NOT go on stage and do this. I will look like I’m constipated.

4. Find an actor from Lost who still lives in Hawaii. I know the guy who played John Locke is still there. I promise I won’t call him Locke. Unless he says I can.

3. Capture a ghost on film. We’re going on a ghost tour. I’m so going to pull a Zak Bagans and be like, “Tom. Go stand alone in that haunted room.”

2. Drink several tropical beverages. Tom has never seen me drunk before. Actually, now that I think of it, I’ve never seen him drunk either. We’re not big drinkers. This should be fun.

1. Tell someone, “Nice lei,” and try to keep a straight face.

Spring Break 2012 In Review

We left for Orlando St Paddy’s Day at 11.

We drove straight through, got to La Quinta around 7.
We checked in and ate at a Denny’s real close
Went back to the car and took in our clothes.
Sunday we got up and we did Park 1
Universal Studios was a great deal of fun.
We saw Cat in the Hat and Things 1 and 2
Goodness there was just a whole lot to do.
Our next big event was Harry Potter’s Castle
The ride was terrifying to me and that was a hassle.
We left this park and went to check in
At the Disney All American Music Resort number 10…..
(not really it was number 1….but it is all about rhyme here)
After we settled we got on a bus and off to Disney Downtown
We had no parking with which to fuss.
We ate at an Irish place and listened to great sound.
We were dragging by ten so we left downtown
At 8 the next morning we went on a Safari
We saw animals abounding in the Serenghetti
We left there near noonish, went and laid by the pool.
The sun was so hot….but the water was cool.
We decided to eat German tonight in Epcot
And stayed til the fireworks had officially stopped
We jumped on a bus and then monorail and…..
Saw the final fireworks at Disney and Electric Parade.
Tuesday we got up and had early Epcot hours
Frank rode some wild rides while I perused flowers.
We ate Morrocan for lunch after watching a wonderful Canada show
It was time for us to head to the Hollywood Studio.
We grabbed a bus and headed to see
The great Experience of a Hollywood Movie
Jose was our guide but somewhere on the trail
Bugsy Malone  took his detail.
Jose joined us again when Bugsy went for the stone
But until that occurred we sat in the boat all alone.
Frank rode another wild ride here I think
I sought some shade and an ice cold soft drink.
We left there and went back to the resort a bit early
OHHHHH….I forgot in Japan I found a pink pearly..
I picked out an oyster and hiding inside
Was a 7” pearl that came out before my eyes.
Wednesday we had planned to be at Magic Kingdom all day
But Frank’s knee was swollen so for an electric scooter we would to pay
Let me tell you they are better than a fast pass
In a wheelchair at Disney you go first….not last.
We rode every ride that we wanted to ride
And waited very short times to get inside.
We were finished by four from start to end
So we went back to the hotel early again
Cranked up the car for the first time in four days
And went to find dinner from the resort far away
We ate at Joes Crab Shack and Frank was King Crab
The food was delicious and the place was not drab .
We got up this morning it was time for us to go…..
We are now officially Disney World pros.

Things That Annoy Me Thursday: Rude Airplane Passengers

I’ll be traveling to Hawaii on Monday.

That’s an eight hour flight. (Tom is like "eight hours? That's nothing. Try flying to and from Korea. That's 16 hours.") (Whatever. Eight hours is still long to me.)

I am not a fan of flying. But I always try to be considerate about it. It seems whenever I fly I get that one person around me that does the following:

--Announces that they hope we don’t die when we go through turbulence

My response: Stop it! Don’t SAY that because I already THINK it. I immediately believe the plane is going to split apart and we’re going to go plummeting towards Earth. This is why I play Lost, based on the TV show. I scan the passengers and decide which Lost character they’d be if we crashed. It helps relax me.

--Constantly have to get up to use the bathroom.

My response: if you have a weak bladder and can help it, DON’T SIT IN THE WINDOW SEATS. Get an aisle seat so you won’t keep irritating the people around you. I once had to sit in the middle seat and the chick beside me kept wanting to use the bathroom. I was fast asleep once, which is blissful for me when I’m on a airplane because then I FORGET I’M THOUSANDS OF MILES ABOVE GROUND and then she had to tap my shoulder and go, “I need to use the restroom.”

--Ignore screaming children

My response: My kids aren’t perfect. They’ve wailed a bit on airplanes. But I have stuff to quiet them. I ALWAYS buy new toys to distract them with. Or I bring the DVD player. I’ve noticed some parents just ignore their kid and will continue to play on their phone or read. I get that some experts say to ignore your child if they are throwing a fit. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO AIRPLANES!

--Practically make out with their partner

My response: You might want to join the mile high club. If so, just do it but NOT in your seats. I don’t want to see a full makeout session. I witnessed this one time when I was flying with my kids. Do you know how embarrassing it is when your kid shouts, “Mommy! I saw his tongue go into her mouth. That can’t be healthy.”

--Keep talking to you even though it’s obvious that you want to read

My response: Look, if someone has a book out and keeps looking down at it, shut up. I’ll chat for a few minutes and then I’m done. If I can, I’d rather read. When I fly to Hawaii, the kids won’t be with me so that’s eight hours of reading time! If I get a chatty person beside me (husband will be on one side, the other is anyone’s guess..) I might have to go, “Shh. It’s reading time now.”

So yeah. Let’s all hope that I get a polite passenger beside me.

Have YOU experienced a rude passenger before?

Spring Has Sprung Hodge Podge - Vol 71

Welcome to the it is springtime edition of the Wednesday Hodgepodge. All are invited to play along, just be sure to add your link at the end of Joyce's post by clicking here. Here are my answers to this week's questions-
1. The first day of spring is here-do you enjoy working in the yard? Weeding, raking, mowing, planting...your favorite springtime garden chore? How about your least favorite?   I like to plant....period..especially herbs.  I have a black thumb and bad allergies.....I love to photograph flowers...so if you have some pretty ones....and you live close to me....just holler when your flowers bloom and I will come and capture them for you.
2. What puts a spring in your step? God, my family, my precious Frank, singing, writing, taking pictures and my job. I bounce around a lot.
3. Describe a time when you had to spring into action.  When on of the kids were small, or when Frank thought he was having a heart attack....yep...that is probably the one.....or the day Lucy (SIL) and I had a car land on us.....we were going to school....should have been in her Fiat....but it would not crank....we went in my two day old car....we were stopped at a light and a car played Dukes of Hazzard from behind us....I grabbed her hair and shoved her into the floor board and laid down in the seat.  The car actually landed on us...God was definitely with us.  Our injuries were minor compared to what they would or should have been. We should have died.
4. We're having carrots for dinner...would you prefer yours raw or cooked?  I eat carrots just about anyway you can fix them...except for a dish called Copper Penny's....YUCK!
5. Do you take the shampoos and other sundries from your hotel room when its time to check out?  Yes because I use them for a mission thing for shelters and homeless.  I figure I have paid for them.
6. What's the most enjoyable team or club you've belonged to and what was it that made it so?  I played church league softball and l loved it....and I bowl with Frank on Thursday nights. I love the people and the time spent with friends and family.
7. Is cloning a sign of progress?  Yes. Should we do something just because we can?
Not necessarily.
8.  Random Thought:  I have just spent four days and nights at Disney World.  Have you ever been?...to either Disney World or Disney Land.  What was your favorite thing to do?  Why?  I have actually been to both.  I love the shows.  I don't ride rides.  This time I went to Hollywood Studio's and did the Great American Movie Race...I think it is my new favorite.  I love movies....especially the old ones.  Hope you have a great rest of the week....see you next week.
