The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff - OPTIONAL

Yovanoff, Brenna The Space Between, 363 p. Razorbill (Penguin), 2011.  $18.  Language: R (21 swears, 4 ‘f’); Mature Content: PG-13 (drinking, suicide, shower scene); Violence: R (torture, mutilated corpses, burning).  Daphne, the daughter of Lilith and Lucifer, has lived in Hell all of her life; her half brother Obie, the son of Adam  - yes, the original Adam, has been her favorite companion, has gone missing and she is desperate to find him.  Daphne has never been to Earth – any demon who goes is subject to the wrath of Azrael, God’s avenging angel – but to find Obie, she will risk everything.  What she doesn’t know, is that the key to finding Obie is through Truman, a broken, bleeding human boy, who is Azrael’s “special project”.

Yovanoff has managed to turn heaven and hell on their heads and made demons and even Lucifer into sympathetic characters.  Grisly at times, and always heart-rending, this is not a book for every school.  There will be plenty of older teens who will be very drawn to it.  HS – OPTIONAL.   Cindy, Library Teacher
