Do As I Say, Not As I Do....Please?
When Kat was about 2 we lived in the country....and I do mean country. The population of our little town was 365 on a good day. We were so far back in the woods that the military used to use the air space for fly bys and to break the sound barrier. The F-16's would barely top the trees....and a few minutes later a huge sonic boom would follow. Anyways, one day I was mixing up corn bread batter for supper and walked from the kitchen to the dining room to check on Kat. She was playing school with her dolls in the living room. The jet was over us before I even knew it was coming and the boom scared the living Bejeezus out of me....to the point that the bowl of batter went sailing into the air, shattering the bowl against the floor, and splattering batter all over the wall and cabinets. The first three words out of my mouth were Sh**, Sh**, Sh**( and no, I was not telling people to be quiet)....to my horror Kat immediately echoed my potty mouth with the most adorable sh** sh** sh**. I looked down at that little angel, standing there with her little fists balled up on her hips, and said, "Baby, don't say that word because it is a very bad word." She immediately replied, "But you said it mommy." Out of the mouths of babes come our best life lessons. I learned that day that if I did not want to teach my child bathroom words then I should not use them. As I gazed into her sweet little face I said, "Mommy is so sorry she used that word and she is not going to use it again if you won't." Kat never missed a bit with, "Ok Mommy we won't say that word again." Well, I have said that word again, heck...I teach high school....but each time I say it....I think about that day in the country and smile.
